The Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center (WVRC) is a growing multi-location emergency and referral practice in the greater Milwaukee area consisting of a fast-paced environment, interesting and challenging caseload, a robust emergency service, and a full compliment of veterinary specialties.

We currently have an opening for a full-time veterinarians in our emergency department in our newly aquired Racine location as well as Waukesha and Grafton.   A part-time weekend position is also available for the right candidate.

Our facilities are equipped with modern diagnostic capabilities combined with beautiful and spacious work environments. Enhancing the facilities are a team of specialists in Surgery, Critical Care, Neurology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology and Diagnostic Imaging (including CT, MRI, Ultrasound). Marshfield Labs, a full diagnostic veterinary laboratory, also compliments the team in the Waukesha location’s lower level.

Emergency Service Veterinary Technicians
Full-time 2nd shift / Weekends  (Waukesha)
Full-time 2nd shift / Weekends  (Racine)

Fast-paced, highly technical position in a busy emergency / specialty environment.  Applicants must be able to perform treatments noted on treatment charts and in medical records, monitor intensive care patients, provide nursing care, take and process x-rays, monitor anesthesia, conduct lab tests / prepare and submit lab samples.  Must be able to communicate well with clients, showing care and concern for their pets. 
No Previous Emergency Experience Necessary – Training Provided

  Full-time 1st shift Neurology Technician (Waukesha)

Neurology Technicians must be able to communicate well with co-workers and clients and show care and concern for their patients. They need to be able to stand and walk for an entire shift, have stamina to work past regularly scheduled shifts when needed, and be able to lift up to 40 pounds.  They also must have the flexibility to work holidays and to be able and willing to switch shifts with co-workers or provide extra coverage if needed.

Must consistently demonstrate excellent client communication skills. Handle all aspects of client communication with regard to informational calls, client follow-up and general questions about their in-hospital or at-home pet’s status. Neurological disease can be difficult for clients to understand.  Compassion, patience, professionalism and kindness to all clients whether in person or on the phone, is a must.

Demonstrate the ability to efficiently process all paperwork and compile patient files. Show compassion and patience to Neurology patients that can prove to be the most challenging and difficult nursing care in the hospital. Possess the ability to lift or help lift and restrain patients up to 50 lbs. Properly perform patient exams, treatments, administer medications; decipher changes in patient progress and report accurate findings to the doctor. Demonstrate the ability to proficiently put in IV catheters.
Assist in all Neurological examinations; perform radiographs, blood work; assist with CT and MRI scans; assist in surgery and maintain hospital care of patients. Anesthetize and monitor all aspects of procedures, including EKG, SPO2, Doppler and recover from anesthesia. Demonstrate the ability to work with all other technicians as a team.  Including helping where needed in other departments or services, cleaning, stocking and other hospital duties.

Emergency Service Technician or Assistant - Sundays 10AM-10PM (Waukesha)

Key tasks in this role include restraint for labs, exams, x-rays/ultrasounds, BP/EKG, and cath placement.  Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:  bringing animals in rooms to visit, or to owners in back, taking animals outside, giving food/water to patients, completing hourly cage checks, 2 hour fluid checks, taking labs downstairs, setting up IVF and cath set ups, setting up for Radiographs and Procedures, cleaning cages – animal soilage, making sure patients are clean and dry, and helping to perform End of Shift List and Hospital Maintenance.  Multi-tasking and attention to detail skills are required.  

Customer Care Representative (Waukesha)

JOB REQUIREMENTS

The Customer Care Representative provides the first impression of the hospital to clients and patients.  The Customer Care Representative must be friendly, professional and courteous, and capable of handling many tasks at once with frequent interruptions.

Essential Functions:

Prior customer service experience, computer, and data entry and phone skills are required.  The schedule is Monday through Friday, afternoon/ evenings, approximately 25 hours per week.

Service Standards:

Provide high levels of customer service to our clients by conducting call backs and performing client satisfaction surveys for all WVRC locations.
Handle inbound and outbound calls to clients in regards to their recent visit(s) and their experience.
Ensure all clients receive a follow-up call within 48 hours of discharge from the hospital.
Respond to client voicemails in a timely manner.
 
Record all related information by entering the data into the applicable software system database.
 
Send all open complaints or issues to the Customer Service Manager to allow for quick resolution.
 
Provide effective communication to other employees/departments to ensure high internal customer service.
 
Maintain confidentiality of all customer information.
 
Express concern for and/or interest in the client.
 
Always use proper manners, such as addressing people appropriately:  “Dr.” for RDVMs and use the client’s first and last name until a different title is established.  Always use “please” and “thank you”.
 
Speak clearly and concisely on a level appropriate to the other individual.  For example, do not use medical terminology to a client who doesn’t understand.

Always answer the phone promptly, within three (3) rings, and speak pleasantly to the caller, no matter the situation.  Answer all messages in a timely manner and always ask permission before putting a client on hold.
 
Recognize the importance of appearance in both professional dress and the hospital’s cleanliness.  Adhere to dress code and keep the hospital clean and pleasant.

Veterinary Site Manager

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties to support the veterinary hospital, including:

Human Resources:

  • Supervise support staff personnel and follow disciplinary procedures if needed

This requires understanding the critical balance between the administrative and clinical functions in the veterinary health care delivery system, and the ability to coordinate and control programs and resources to achieve this balance.

A qualified candidate must have the ability to work under the broad administrative supervision of the Hospital Manager. 

Must be able to exercise latitude and use sound judgment in decision-making,  and comply with accepted veterinary management principles. 

Qualifications:
 
Strong understanding of the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency profession and the relationship we have with our clients and referring veterinarians.

At least 2 years of previous Management experience.
 
Strong computer skills.

Veterinary Technician Student Internships

The Veterinary Technician program at the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) is a two-year associate degree program in applied science conducted under the direction of licensed veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians as well as instructors in the General Studies area. 

It emphasizes hands-on animal skills and the technical information necessary to perform certain duties under the supervision of a veterinarian. 

Internship (work experience) is a very important phase of practical training for students enrolled in the program. It generally follows the second semester of class work in the college summer recess and is conducted during a period of eight weeks (or 320 hours). 

The Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center offers internships to MATC students to enhance the student’s educational experience and expose them to an emergency medicine environment.

WVRC offers training and experience in a state-of-the-art modern facility utilizing digital imaging, ultrasound, endoscopy, fluoroscopy and CT.

Veterinary Student Externship Program

The 4th year curriculum at UWM’s School of Veterinary Medicine includes 48-weeks of clinical instruction which begins in mid-May.

Each 4th year student designs his/her 4th year schedule to meet their personal career goals. The student selects 1 of 5 career track options. Each career option includes specific required rotations taken in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and significant time for electives that meet the individual needs and goals of the student.

Students may elect to spend extensive time in other instructional settings in the form of an externship that contribute to their career goals.

The Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center offers 4th year veterinary students two-week externships in the emergency/critical care department.

Students will have a hands-on experience dealing with a varied and interesting caseload in a fast-paced, state-of-the-art facility.

Areas that will be covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Triage On All Incoming Patients
  • Obtain a Medical History
  • Physical Exam (Including Orthopedic / Neurologic if Applicable)
